Fighting Local Hunger with “The Cotton Patch Gospel”

One-Man Show of Musical Comes to St. Ann & the Holy Trinity

Music by Harry Chapin

The Off-Broadway musical, “The Cotton Patch Gospel” is coming to St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church in Brooklyn Heights on Sunday, April 21, at 3:00 pm. The one-man show, performed by Phillip Kaufmann, will raise money for programs that help fight hunger. Admission is $10 plus goodwill offerings at the door, with 100% of funds going directly to fight hunger.

“The Cotton Patch Gospel” is a musical, written by Tom Key and Russel Trez, featuring the music of singer/songwriter, activist and Brooklyn native, the late Harry Chapin. The Chapin family supports the use of the piece to address concerns about global poverty.

The story, inspired by Koinonia Farm founder Clarence Jordan’s translations of the Gospels, imagines what it would be like if Jesus were born in Gainesville, Georgia, in the 20th century.

What makes this “The Cotton Patch Gospel” truly unique is the one man performance by native Illinoisan, Phillip Kaufmann. Through the use of audio and video technology, Phillip portrays over 20 characters, plays 11 musical instruments and sings his own backup vocals

All proceeds from the event will support the fight against hunger, with 50% going to the Hunger Outreach Project of St. Ann & the Holy Trinity, 25% to WhyHunger (an organization founded by Harry Chapin and New York radio host and Catholic philanthropist, Bill Ayres – www.whyhunger.org), and 25% to Mennonite Central Committee food program (www.mcc.org).

Kaufmann has taken his one-man show on the road and raised nearly $80,000 to combat hunger in the past 2 years. Information about his efforts is available at www.cpgfoodproject.org and Facebook at Cotton Page Gospel Food Project.

A review of Kaufmann’s show with singer/songwriter Jen Chapin is at http://greatlakes.mcc.org/stories/news/toe-tapping-way-address-hunger.

WhyHunger lists Phil and his show along with artists like Bruce Springsteen, Carlos Santana, and Chicago in their efforts to fight hunger http://www.whyhunger.org/aahp.

The St. Ann’s Book Club will discuss The Testament of Mary by Colm Tóibin. The book is a provocative, haunting, and indelible portrait of Mary. Tóibin presents her as a solitary older woman still seeking to understand the events that become the narrative of the New Testament and the foundation of Christianity. The book is now the subject of a major one-woman Broadway show starring Fiona Shaw.

Thursday, March 14, 6:45 pm
St. Ann’s Parish Hall, 157 Montague St.

St. Ann’s Book of the Month Club will meet in the Parish Hall after the 6:00 pm Holy Eucharist to discuss Take This Bread by Sara Miles. One morning, Sara Miles, raised an atheist, wandered into a church, received communion, and found herself transformed–embracing a faith she’d once scorned.

A lesbian left-wing journalist who’d covered revolutions around the world, Miles didn’t discover a religion that was about angels or good behavior or piety; her faith centered on real hunger, real food, and real bodies. Before long, she turned the bread she ate at communion into tons of groceries, piled on the church’s altar to be given away. Within a few years, she and the people she served had started nearly a dozen food pantries in the poorest parts of their city.

Take This Bread is rich with real-life characters–church ladies, millionaires, schizophrenics, bishops, and thieves–all blown into Miles’s life by the relentless force of her newfound calling. Here, in this passionate book, is the living communion of Christ.

Book Reading by Alan Light, with a Live Performance of “Hallelujah” by the Guggenheim Grotto

Sunday, March 10, 2013, 3:00 pm
St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church

Music critic and author Alan Light will read from and discuss his new book, The Holy or the Broken: Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley and the Unlikely Ascent of “Hallelujah,” at this special reading. Praised as a “masterful work of critical journalism” (Kirkus Reviews), The Holy or the Broken tells the story of how Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” rocked an entire culture.

Through in-depth interviews with its interpreters and the key figures who were actually there for its original recordings, Alan Light follows the unlikely journey of Cohen’s haunting and inscrutable song from obscurity to international anthem. The Holy or the Broken gives insight into how great songs come to be, how they are listened to, and how they can be forever reinterpreted.

St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church is the site of a memorable 1991 career-making performance of “Hallelujah” by Jeff Buckley at a tribute concert for his father called “Greetings from Tim Buckley.” In 1994, Jeff Buckley recorded what is arguably the definitive version of the song.

The reading will begin with a live performance of “Hallelujah” by the Guggenheim Grotto, an Irish folk-pop group now based in Brooklyn.

First recorded in 1984, “Hallelujah” is now a pop culture staple, covered by hundreds of artists including Bob Dylan, U2, Bon Jovi, k.d. lang, Justin Timberlake, Susan Boyle, and Celine Dion. It has been featured in movies and on television shows ranging from Shrek to The West Wing. It eventually became the go-to song in times of national tragedy, chosen by VH1 for its official post-9/11 tribute video, and most recently by The Voice in tribute to the victims of Sandy Hook.

Alan Light is a frequent contributor to the New York Times and Rolling Stone, and former editor-in-chief of Vibe and Spin magazines.

Copies of The Holy or the Broken will be available for purchase and signing at the reading.

A suggested donation of $10.00 is requested to help sustain the church and host timely community events.

Beginning in Lent and continuing into Eastertide, St. Ann & the Holy Trinity will feature Spirituality and Sustainability, a program that deals with issues at the nexus of our relationship to food and our commitment to creation. We are hopeful that this programming will be nourishing for our community and help us in our efforts to nourish others.

Spirituality and Sustainability will be explored in the following ways:

Sunday, February 17. A Bible Study following Coffee Hour (after the 11:00 am Holy Eucharist) will consider stories in Genesis that explore humanity’s roles and responsibilities in the created order and the enduring legacy of biblical visions of creation. (Also note Sandwich Sundays, below.)

Sunday, February 24. The Rev. Franklin “Skip” Vilas will preach and lead a Coffee Hour conversation following the 11:00 am Holy Eucharist. A former Rector of our parish, Fr. Vilas is a proponent of the Creation Season faith formation program and helped to found GreenFaith. GreenFaith’s mission is to inspire, educate and mobilize people of diverse religious backgrounds for environmental leadership.

Thursday, February 28. Cooking Class: “Healthy, Local and Quick!” at 6:45 pm in the Parish Hall. Join parishioners Colleen Heemeyer and Syd Farley as they demonstrate how to whip up easy meals using local produce. All are welcome to the 6:00 pm Eucharist.

Sunday, March 3. Museum Outing: “Our Global Kitchen: Food, Nature, Culture” at the Museum of Natural History, leaving after the 11:00 am Holy Eucharist. This new exhibit explores the complex and intricate food system that brings what we eat from farm to fork.

Sunday, March 10. Claire West will be the guest preacher at the 11:00 am Holy Eucharist. Ms. West works with Edible Church-yard at Union Theological Seminary. She will also lead a Coffee Hour discussion after the service about this work.

Thursday, March 14, 6:45 pm. The St. Ann’s Book Club will meet after the 6:00 pm Holy Eucharist to discuss Take This Bread by Sara Miles. The author discovered a faith centered on hunger, food, and bodies that resulted in giving away groceries collected at the altar and establishing food pantries in poor communities of her city.

Sandwich Sundays starting February 17. In the spirit of Spirituality and Sustainability, beginning February 17, the Sundays in Lent at St. Ann’s will be known as Sandwich Sundays! We will bring sandwiches for distribution to the hungry and homeless at The Gathering Place, a drop-in center of our partners at CAMBA in Brownsville/East New York. The sandwiches, for adults, should be delivered in plastic bags to the Parish Hall before the 11:00 am Holy Eucharist. We welcome all who can to join us in this Lenten discipline, which we hope is food for the soul and a means to mission for our parish.

Thursday, February 14, 6:45 pm
St. Ann’s Parish Hall, 157 Montague St.

Join us as St. Ann’s Book Club discusses 8 Habits of Love: Open Your Heart, Open Your Mind, a spiritual guidebook to living life through love and connection by the Rev. Ed Bacon.

The Rev. Bacon believes that every person can live a full and creative life if they can learn to move through troubling emotions such as fear, anger, and sadness to find the beloved within themselves. Readers learn how insecurity can keep us from connecting with others, our loving self, and finding our own peace, joy, and creative power.

8 Habits of Love shows through relatable stories how to create a full, meaningful life by developing simple habits——stillness, truth, forgiveness, compassion, play, candor, generosity, and community——and by asking such important questions as: How do I know I’m living the life I should be? How do I forgive those who have hurt me? How do I talk candidly with difficult people? How do I best help others when they need it? And How do I let go of the past and move forward?

Everyone is welcome to attend.
