The MD Duo, Tim Monaghan, drummer, and Matthew Devine, jazz saxophonist, performed at St. Ann & the Holy Trinity’s weekly Summer Music Concert Series on Thursday, August 13, 5:30-6:00 pm. The concerts are held in the Peace Garden on Clinton Street, beside the church entrance at Montague and Clinton Streets in Brooklyn Heights. Musicians perform 30-minute sets in the newly landscaped garden for an audience of passersby invited to listen from the sidewalk while keeping safe social distance.
Tim Monaghan performed on the Western multi-percussion kit, and Matt Devine on tenor and soprano saxophones. The MD Duo melds two wildly diverse and expandable musicians’ vision of jazz, of improvised music, to thrilling and chameleonic result. Students of torchbearers and innovators like Billy Hart and Dave Liebman, the members of MD were subsequent journeymen of experimental rock, soul-funk, punk, and disparate world/folk music traditions–they have a sound, style, and approach all their own. The music of Wayne Shorter, Thelonious Monk, and select jazz standards are all treated with irreverence and abandon by MD, ears keenly attuned to each other through hairpin turns of melody and the spontaneous stretching of time and form. Expect to hear 60s era jazz compositions and familiar standards in ways you didn’t realize you wanted to.
Tim Monaghan is a Brooklyn-based drummer and educator, with a BFA in jazz performance from the New School. Tim has experience in performing and recording many styles of music, from rock (J.A.C.K., The Walkmen), soul (Deva and The Delmonts) and psych-folk (Brute Force), to classical (Hunter Symphony). He is the drummer for the klezmer rock band Golem.
Matthew Devine is an environmental educator and researcher inspired by Permaculture, Bioregionalism, and Ecological Design perspectives. His interests are focused on better understanding pro-environmental behavioral motivations, and bringing a critical consciousness to contemporary relationships with community and nature.
