Religious feeling, regardless of personal faith, has inspired composers to create glorious music. 12th Century Christian mystic, abbess Hildegard Von Bingen, produced plainchants of great expression and beauty. Gabriel Fauré, 1885-1924, who was very much a doubter, wrote of his Requiem “Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest.” Vaughan Williams, 1872-1958, the ‘cheerful agnostic’, set to music verse of overtly religious inspiration from 17th century poet and Anglican priest George Herbert.

Musica Mystica will include 150 singers from Grace Chorale of Brooklyn and the Saint Ann’s School High School Chorus, Peter Clark, baritone, Morissa Pepose, soprano, the Saint Ann’s Consort and organ. There will be a second performance of Musica Mystica at St. Ann’s on Sunday, November 11, at 3:00 pm.
