The Rev. John Denaro Named Honorary Canon
May 5, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pmFree
The Right Rev. Lawrence Provenzano, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island has named the Rev. John E. Denaro, rector of St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church, an honorary canon of the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City, New York. A seating ceremony will take place at the cathedral on Sunday, May 5, 4:00 pm, at a Choral Evensong for Eastertide.
Honorary canons are named by the bishop for noteworthy and distinguished service to the cathedral and the diocese. In keeping with hundreds of years of cathedral tradition, the designees will be given the right to use the honorific title of canon for life. As rector, Fr. Denaro leads St. Ann’s, which was designated as a pro-cathedral of the diocese as part of the sesquicentennial celebration of the Diocese of Long Island in 2018.
“Fr. John Denaro is the rector of our pro-cathedral and seating him as an honorary canon of the cathedral is another way of connecting his ministry at St. Ann & the Holy Trinity to that of the seat of the bishop under the banner ‘One Diocese, One Mission,’” said Bishop Provenzano.
Also named honorary canons are Mr. Pat Guy and Mr. Ted Gerbrecht. The Very Rev. Dr. Michael Sniffen, Dean of the Cathedral of the Incarnation, said, “The seating is a solemn occasion of thanksgiving for selfless service given to the church over many years. It is one of the highest honors a bishop bestows and is a wonderful moment in the life of the cathedral. As we welcome these new honorary canons, we give thanks for the ways they will continue to enrich our common life and support our mission as a house of Prayer for Long Island.”
The evensong will feature the full cathedral choirs and music will include Evening Service in G by Herbert Sumison. The service is open to the public and all are welcome to attend.
