Give Us the Ballot: The Modern Struggle for Voting Rights in America
A Talk and Evening with Author Ari Berman
Thursday, March 30, 2017, 7:00 pm
All Saints Episcopal Church in Park Slope (Seventh Ave at 7th Street)
Please join us for talk and evening with Ari Berman, author of Give Us the Ballot: The Modern Struggle for Voting Rights in America. As Berman argues, our entire democratic process hangs on every citizen’s right to vote. And yet, as critical as voting rights are, they have never been universal and are under assault today.
In a groundbreaking narrative history, Berman charts both the transformation of American democracy under the Voting Rights Act and efforts to limit voting rights from 1965 to the present day. The VRA enfranchised millions of Americans and is regarded as the crowning achievement of the civil rights movement. Yet more than fifty years later we are still fighting heated battles over race, representation, and political power, with the Supreme Court declaring a key part of the Voting Rights Act unconstitutional. Berman recounts this important history and frames the threats to voting rights today.
All are encouraged to attend and become part of the movement to ensure the vote for everyone.
