Gloria (for March 2020)

Jacqueline de Weever caught the first moments of spring in her poem, “Gloria (for March 2020).”

Gloria (for March 2020)
By Jacqueline de Weever

Trills and roulades stop me
under the tree, its bare limbs
still limp under winter’s shearing
the singer, small, grey,
head thrown back
spills three sets
of distinct melody
in one spew
across the park empty
of listeners.
I am the sole attendee
this concert hall
emptied by hidden ambush.
No social distancing
for this chorister
his conductor not subject
to human directives.
Three strands ring out
pause
again three coils
of praise song
for the first day
of spring.
